Topo Designs, founded by Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen, also give credit to other local people in Colorado who believed in their designs and their dream to build quality products in the United States. Without the support of the locals, we might not be talking about this backpack today.
They pride themselves on creating gear that is classic, simple, and well-designed. They’re inspired by not only who they are as adventurers but the world around them that they live and breathe in.
They not only draw inspiration from where they live but work hard to preserve this country by building and delivering their products locally in order to reduce their shipping emissions as a company. The backpack you see above is made in Colorado. If you’d like to read more about their manufacturing process, you can learn more on the Topo Designs website here.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
I personally own a Topo Designs backpack, and I have to say it’s one of the most versatile backpacks I’ve ever owned. It looks professional and also has a spot for your laptop and could be carried to the office or boardroom without standing out as too casual. I personally don’t use the laptop sleeve because my laptop is 17″ and the backpack can only accommodate a 15″ laptop. It also has the Cordura exterior to be durable and resilient with everyday use.
If you are wanting to take it out for a hike on the trails, it also includes leather lash tabs to secure your extra gear or attach a bike light. A side pocket to hold your water bottle in case you need it. The color options are great and can really reach out to a diverse customer base.
Overall I like its classic style, overall quality, and versatility. This is truly a backpack that could become your best friend and in my opinion, it’s easily one of the best backpacks made in the USA.
Defy Bags Menace Backpack 2.0 (All-Around Backpack)
Estimated Price | $305 |
Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | Yes |
Number of Compartments | 1 (organizer/and side pockets available) |
Dimensions | 11 x 17.5 x 5.5 inches |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
The Defy brand is one of the best company backstories of what it means to be an American, have a dream, and make it happen. Founded in 2008 by Chris Tag, the name itself came from him wanting to “defy” the corporate world of brands and create an American-manufacturing brand from the ground up.
Chris had been in creative advertising for most of his career but began to lose his drive and inspiration. He decided to use all of that knowledge and experience to build and promote his own brand. It was obviously a great strategy.
Handcrafted in Chicago, Illinois, the Defy brand continues to innovate and expand its products while still keeping the original goal of quality, American-made offerings.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
This style comes in one of the strongest exteriors with its 1050D water-resistant ballistic nylon. If you really want to test its strength, the 2” quick-release buckle is tested to hold over a thousand pounds of pressure. That’s a lot for a backpack.
Other things that stand out to me are its adjustable side pockets, the vented, closed-cell padded back to keep your back cooler during the warm months, and the exterior water bottle pockets. There really weren’t any details left unturned on this one.
Who We Recommend it For:
This is really the most versatile of all of the backpacks I have seen. Defy also makes a lot of other great American-made backpacks as well so be sure to check out some of their other backpacks too. This is a great backpack to grab for everyday use as you could really hold anything you might need and then some. It could also work well for a quick weekend trip or adventure with its strength and durability.
The style is very streamlined and will never go out of style. It’s rugged enough to go with you outside and stylish enough to bring into the office.
University Backpack by Bags USA (Basic Backpack)
Estimated Price | $50 |
Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | Yes |
Number of Compartments | 1 |
Dimensions | 17 x 12 x 6 inches |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
Bags USA was founded in 1985, and much like their styles of bags, they focus more on basics than flash. They manufacture all of their products at their Huntington Beach, California location, which is just over 10 minutes away from Bolsa Chica State Beach.
They tend to cater to larger groups and also give back to these groups by providing services for sports teams, disaster relief efforts, medical field workers, businesses, and government organizations. If you need a custom bag with a logo or just want something that is of good quality, this is the brand for you.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
If you are needing a backpack with basic options to get the job done, the University backpack is the perfect fit. It will hold all of the books that you need to get from class to class, and you can rest assured of its quality from being American-made.
This is a great price point for a backpack and can be customized for your team or group pretty easily. Although it only has one large compartment, it does offer two front pockets that you can use to keep some of your essentials in for easy-to-grab access.
Who We Recommend it For:
This backpack would work for an individual who needs to get stuff from one place to the next without any fancy frills and, therefore, without a fancy price tag. If you’re going for a blank canvas that you could make your own, this would be a great foundation bag to add to your collection.
They do also offer a wholesale option if your business or sports team is interested in buying the bags in bulk and getting an even better price.
Frost River Isle Royale Bushcraft Backpack (Long-Trek Backpack)
Estimated Price | $400 |
Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | Yes |
Number of Compartments | 1 Large (Outside Pockets) |
Dimensions | 23 x 15 x 8 inches |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
Frost River’s roots go all the way back to 1838, where they first began learning about the materials you should use to make products that last. In 1905 they partnered with the SB Foot Tannery in Red Wing, Minnesota, and continue to use these fine leathers in their products today.
They build their products knowing that they will need to be able to stand up to any adventure that you put them on. Inspired by the hard workers in the logging and trapping industries as well as the outdoor adventurers, they are still perfecting their craft today.
All of their bags are made in their facilities in Duluth, Minnesota, because they believe in the dream that was started by the brand’s foundation. Make quality products in America for Americans.
When issues in the supply chain occurred, they shut down their production facilities of bags and began making PPE for their local hospitals. Making masks, face shields, and even some air-purifying respirators. This shift in focus was not only because they wanted to help out their country but because their families were on the frontlines in the healthcare field.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
The Isle Royale Backpack is made for any adventure you can put it up against. It has a spot specifically made for an ax, which is definitely pretty unique to its competition. There are options to expand the bag or cinch it down depending on how much you will need to pack with each trip.
The waxed canvas is really the superstar power of this bag. It has been tested for many years by outdoorsmen and is known to stand up to all conditions. This tough material, paired with premium leather and solid brass hardware, is an absolute American icon.
Another great feature of this bag is the two outside pockets on the front. Each of them is able to hold a 1 Liter bottle if necessary. That gives you endless options of what you can pack for your trip and also lengthens the time you could be gone.
Who We Recommend it For:
This backpack would be a perfect option for the ultimate adventure-seeker. Whether you want to go out and hike the trails or need something that will fit all of your necessities for a long weekend getaway this bag will fit the bill.
Knowing that it’s not only hand-crafted here in America but is part of a company that has been perfecting its craft for so long makes the higher purchase price a little bit easier to take in. If taken care of properly, you should only have to buy one of these backpacks.
It even has a pocket at the top of the bag made specifically for your map. Be sure and snatch up this backpack to take on your next treasure hunt.
Filson Tin Cloth Backpack (Outstanding Quality)
Estimated Price | $350 |
Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | No |
Number of Compartments | One main compartment |
Dimensions | 12″ x 15″ x 5” |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
Filson was established in 1897 and is based out of Seattle, Washington. They know that in order to create quality products that will stand up to life’s adventures, you must do the research and know what materials are going in. They make sure all of their products are made with only the best, most sustainable, and responsibly-sourced materials available.
They began their company during the Yukon Gold Rush and worked hard to create products that could stand up to the unknown adventures of the wild west. They continue this mindset with each product they create today, and this backpack is a great example of classic style, durable, quality materials, and efficiency for what you need it for.
Its founder C.C. Filson started the company with the quote, “Your satisfaction is the sole purpose of our transaction,” and that saying still leads the company today.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
What stands out to me about this bag is its craftsmanship and design. This bag would be perfect for college students or working professionals who need to carry books, a laptop, or other items securely. The leather straps are very comfortable, and the back of the backpack is padded.
Overall, I think the backpack looks great, and I like the rather basic design. Filson backpacks are some of the most durable backpacks ever made, and compared to those made overseas, they last much longer.
Who We Recommend it For:
This backpack would be a great style to choose if you do a lot of light traveling and just need one bag that you can count on.
The company offers an option to rebuild backpacks to continue their lifespan. Their hope is that the backpacks they ship out the door will get to adventure through multiple family generations.
Green Guru Commuter Bag (Eco-Friendly)
Estimated Price | $75 |
Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | Yes |
Number of Compartments | 1 Main (Small Pockets Available) |
Dimensions | 19.92 x 12.52 x 2.76 inches |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
Green Guru was founded in 2005 with a mission to take used outdoor gear and give it a new purpose so it wouldn’t end up in a landfill. Their warehouse in Boulder, Colorado, receives donated materials that are leftover from several partner companies. Once received, they process, sort, and sew these pieces into new finished products that will continue to enhance your adventures in the environment instead of hindering them.
They are B-Corp Certified and have achieved Gold Level Status with the Colorado Environmental Leadership Program. To meet these criteria, they not only protect the environment but also support their local economies.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
If you would have told me before I researched this product that you could take upcycled bicycle inner tubes, upcycled street sign scraps, waterproof tarps with some foam padding, and other materials and create a useful backpack, I probably would have told you there was no way. Yet the Green Guru Commuter Bag does just that.
Not only is it a useful product made out of upcycled scraps, but the design is perfect for a bag to use on the go. It has one big compartment with a roll-over top that keeps everything inside protected from outside elements. It also has two side pockets that make it easy to access the things that you need at your fingertips.
Who We Recommend it For:
This would be a great backpack for someone who is out in the elements for their commute to and from work and needs something that is comfortable to wear while riding a bike or walking but is also nice looking to carry into the office once you reach your destination.
This could also be a great option if you live close to your local grocery store and want to try and save some gas in your car and add some steps to your day. The Green Guru Commuter bag could definitely hold the ingredients for your next meal.
When you buy this bag, you know that you’re not only supporting an American-made brand, but you are also doing your part to reduce waste and a great example that sometimes one man’s trash really can be another man’s treasure.
Equinox Parula Backpack (Light Daytrip Backpack)

They have been perfecting their craft for over 20 years and continue to work on diminishing their carbon footprint while striving to keep production of quality products here in America.
Their goal is not only to provide an earth-friendly manufacturing process but also to keep it a great place to work for their American employees. When you purchase a product from Equinox, you are not only supporting your neighbor, but you can feel an extra connection to how and where it’s made.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
The three color options available in this style give it a little bit of flash without going too far out. The charcoal gray, olive green, and ridge blue are all great options for a day out on the trail.
With mesh pockets on both sides for easy access to your water bottle, you won’t have to worry about staying hydrated while out adventure-seeking. There is also mesh along the back of the backpack to help with ventilation while you carry your backpack along.
They have also added some small details that will help with loopholes along the front to attach gear or essentials and a top-carry handle just in case you need it.
Who We Recommend it For:
The customer reviews for this style were very positive for light, day trip use. If you are looking for a backpack to store multiple days’ worth of stuff in, this is not the bag for you.
It was also suggested as a great option if you need a carry-on bag for traveling as it was just the right size to pack a single day of necessities.
This style does not come with the waistband attachment; however, it can be ordered separately and makes a great addition to carrying the bag along the trail.
Mission Workshop Fitzroy Backpack (Large Backpack)

Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | Yes |
Number of Compartments | One (top-loading) |
Dimensions | 15 x 20 x 8 inches |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
This brand was originally founded under the name Chrome back in 1994 and revamped its goals and name in 2009, and became known as Mission Workshop. This name reflects the company’s old warehouse headquarters in San Francisco, California which was remodeled by its founders and crew.
They are creative entrepreneurs with a mission to bring products to customers that will make their day-to-day lives better. They produce gear that is not only going to withstand the elements and work that needs to be done, but that also looks good while doing it.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
While this bag only has one large compartment, it does have multiple other weatherproof compartments built into it that help to keep essentials from falling to the bottom. This is also one of the only backpacks that I found that can hold up to a 17” laptop.
It is designed to keep your gear in and the outside elements where they belong. Waterproof materials and military spec construction give you peace of mind to carry your load around without worrying about anything getting ruined.
The Fitzroy is made of 1000D Nylon in either black or gray that will give your backpack both strength and durability wherever you go. Load it up and carry on about your day.
Who We Recommend it For:
This would be a great bag for weekend travel or hiking trips. It provides enough space to get in all of your essentials along with some extras.

Duluth Pack Rambler (All-In-One Backpack)
Estimated Price | $310 |
Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | No |
Number of Compartments | One Large (3 outside pockets) |
Dimensions | 19 x 17 x 6 inches |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
Established in 1882, Duluth Pack is the oldest canvas and leather bag manufacturer left standing in the United States. Founded by Camille Poirier (a French-Canadian immigrant) who saw an opportunity to provide quality packs to those working in the railway, port, timber, and mining industries, his dream still remains alive today.
Each Duluth Pack product is guaranteed for life on its craftsmanship and hardware. They also come with a hand-signed white tag with the name of the craftsman that put your bag together.
You can now take that personalization even one step further by going on their website and reading about the person who signed your tag. This is really a unique option that kind of sets their products apart from any others and really adds that personal touch.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
This backpack could be used while exploring the trails or is stylish enough that it could also be a great option to carry your belongings into the office. The 15 oz. canvas construction is going to hold up well, and with the outside front and side pockets, it gives you a lot of options on how you want to organize your stuff.
This bag is a little more costly than some of the other styles we have gone over, but with the quality and craftsmanship (along with that lifetime guarantee) you know that you are making a true investment into an American-made product that is made to last you a very long time with the proper care.
The Rambler also comes in some really classic coloring options that could be dressed up or down depending on you what you needed it for.
Who We Recommend it For:
This option from Duluth Pack would be a great fit for someone who is wanting to find the perfect backpack that can be used for everyday use or recreational use as needed. It’s classy, it’s functional, and it’s not something you can find at an average chain store.
This would also make a great weekend backpack for a short trip where you don’t want to have to carry multiple bags to different locations.
There were many reviews left by customers who stated they had their pack for over a decade, and one had even made it through 6 tours of duty overseas.
Parco Premium Backpack (Organized and Protective Backpack)
Estimated Price | $190 |
Water-Resistant | Yes |
Padded Shoulder Straps | Yes |
Number of Compartments | 3 (Organizers also available) |
Dimensions | 14 x 6 x 17 inches |
Product Origin and Manufacturer Information:
The Parco brand, which originally started out as a construction company back in the 1980s, believes in treating its customers like family and providing them products that are both useful and efficient.
They are based out of Austin, Texas, keeping 3 main focuses at the forefront of all of their products, and those are customer, quality, and safety. They want people to be able to travel the world, or even just go to school, with an extra layer of safety if they were to ever need it.
They may not have a lot of product offerings, but the options they have are specific, well-designed, and ready to be your new everyday carry backpack.
What We Like and Don’t Like About This Backpack:
This backpack has a compartment or place for absolutely anything you could imagine. It has a hook for your keys, slots for your pens, a lined area for your laptop, another lined spot for your sunglasses, and even a secret pocket along the back for your passport, wallet, or phone.
While it might not be what you want to think about when getting ready to head off to school or travel, the Parco company has also designed this backpack with your safety in mind. The outside of the backpack is made of 840D ballistic-grade material, and it comes with a protective NIJ Level-IIIA panel for added safety.
Who We Recommend it For:
This backpack would be a great option for any student or urban worker who needs a backpack for a lot of stuff that needs to be organized. The different options to put your things away in a neat place so that they are easy to find are perfect for work or school.
The enhanced safety features of this backpack also make it an ideal candidate for traveling or to help a parent feel a little more secure when they send their child off to school. These features are fairly unique to this brand and style and would probably push me toward purchasing this one just for that extra safety measure.
If organization and safety aren’t enough to persuade you to try out a Parco Premium backpack, they have also not forgotten that comfort is a huge buying point of a backpack. With this in mind, they have added adjustable cross-straps and shoulder straps, enhanced back padding, and the bag itself weighs less than 4 pounds, including the added safety panel.
This backpack really checks so many boxes of a great all-around backpack and to top it off being made by a small, family-owned American business is the cherry on top.

The reviews for this style were very positive for its minimalistic stature and for being just the right size for a quick adventure. Hi, my name is Kevin and I’m from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Choosing products made in America is important to me because it supports local economies, creates jobs, helps the environment, and ensures ethical labor practices. I also find that American made products are usually of higher quality so although they’re a little more expensive, you save money in the long run. Before starting this website I was in the USMC infantry and nowadays I work on this website as a hobby.
Kevin my son needs a backpack for college and I can’t decide which one he would prefer. Which would you recommend?
Hey Jamie, it really just depends on his style. I think the Topo Designs backpacks look great and they have a pretty neutral look/design so I think that would be a safe bet.
